Mutu brace cancels Czechs

Two Adrian Mutu goals gave Romania a 2-0 win over the Czech Republic on Saturday to lift his side above the Czechs into second place in Group One. The Netherlands clnched at least a playoff berth as a Ruud van Nistelrooy goal saw off Armenia 1-0, while Andorra held Finland to a goalless draw.

"We played a great match," Romania coach Victor Piturca told reporters. "It was one of our best performances for years but also a painful reminder of the points we have lost in earlier qualifiers." The Netherlands have 25 points from nine matches, three ahead of second-placed Romania who have played two games more and face Finland away in their final game next month. The Czechs have 21 from nine matches.

Mutu, who scored twice against Andorra last month, netted his first in the 26th minute from Razvan Rat's cross. The former Chelsea striker added a second 20 minutes into the second half.

Romania's 37-year-old midfielder Dorinel Munteanu won his 126th cap to overtake Gheorghe Hagi's national record while Piturca opted for an experimental frontline of Razvan Cocis of Sheriff Tiraspol and Sportul Studentesc's Ionut Mazilu supporting Mutu.

Jan Koller hit the post for the away side in the second half and the lacklustre Czechs, who had scored 14 goals in their last two qualifiers, spurned other good chances.

"Our chances of automatic qualification are seriously compromised now," said Czech coach Karel Bruckner.

A Cesena risolve Mutu

Mutu completes suspension

The Football Association today confirmed former Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu has completed his seven-month suspension.

Mutu, sacked by Chelsea last season when he tested positive for cocaine, was given the green light to resume his playing career by a disciplinary commission.

The Romanian international was given a schedule of education and rehabilitation and the FA were satisfied the player had undertaken the programme satisfactorily.

A spokesman for the FA said: “We can confirm that Adrian Mutu has completed an education and rehabilitation programme and is now free to play.”

The shamed striker will now continue his career with Juventus. Mutu has been training with the club since Chelsea showed him the door last year.

Chelsea are still pursuing a legal claim for compensation against Mutu. They were given the go-ahead to take their case to FIFA last month and expect to recoup at least £8m (€11.6m) of the £15.8m (€22.9m) they paid for him from Parma.

Juve boss Fabio Capello said the 26-year-old will play some part against Cagliari on Sunday.

“He is working hard and he deserves to play,” said Capello. “He will certainly do that on Sunday against Cagliari.”

Chelsea Get Go Ahead To Seek Compensation From Mutu
The Premier League appeals committee have cleared the way for Chelsea to seek compensation in the wake of Adrian Mutu's move to Juventus.

The Blues are seeking to recover £8 million of the £15.8million they paid Parma for the Romanian striker, whom they sacked last October after he’d tested positive for cocaine.
Chelsea say the striker, now with Juventus, broke his contract by persistent misconduct.

The 26-year-old striker is currently serving a worldwide ban which expires in May.

Chelsea circulated a press release on Wednesday which said:

‘Following the Football Association Premier League Appeals Committee decision today, that "the conduct of Adrian Mutu in taking banned drugs was gross misconduct which entitled the club to treat the player’s contract as at an end and amounted to a unilateral breach without just cause or sporting just cause", the club has issued the following statement:

‘Chelsea Football Club is obviously pleased that the Appeals Committee has vindicated the club’s position and opened the door for a compensation claim and sporting sanctions before FIFA’s Dispute Resolution Chamber. Chelsea will continue to pursue the case vigorously as the principle is an important one.’

While Mutu is Chelsea’s opponent in this case, if any damages are eventually awarded it is probable that they would be payable by Juventus.

The Premier League said Chelsea were now entitled to proceed to seek compensation and sporting sanctions from the dispute resolution chamber (DRC) of Fifa. But as well as referring the matter to Fifa, it is possible that Chelsea could even take it to a civil court.

Chelsea wanted to prevent Mutu being able to sign for another club on a free transfer at the end of his seven-month suspension, but he signed for Juventus in February and has been training with them ever since.

Here is Mutu!

Adrian Mutu has been officially introduced to the press and has trained with his new team mates for the first time. It all happened at the Sisport Centre where he was assigned the No 30 shirt, the same number he was registered with at Uefa.

The strong Romanian striker tells about his first feelings as a Bianconero: “I’m happy, after a bad time this is the start of a new life for me. Juventus is one of the strongest teams in the world, honestly I did not expect to make a new start from such a high-ranked Club and because of that I must thank the Bianconeri Club, the coach and my managers. I have to wait three more months, during which I’ll be training with my new team-mates; then I’ll be ready to put my skills at the team’s disposal. I feel I have much matured, this experience has made learn that if you want to play soccer at a high level you must lead a professional life and if you have a family you must be close to them. Capello is a winner and I’m happy to be part of a squad who aims at winning it all; I hope to be able to do my own part in the last two matches of the season and give my contribution to winning the Scudetto and, who knows, maybe also the Champions’ League!”

Fabio Capello said about Mutu’s signing: “It’s a very good signing, he’s one of those players who can enhance the team’s technical level, he’s got exceptional shots. On a personal level, he made a faux pas, he has to make up for it and Juventus is the right place where he can make it.” During the official presentation, Luciano Moggi denied the rumours of the player joining them only temporarily: “Mutu is a great player and he’s here to stay and play in Juventus”.

Juve give Livorno Mutu

Juventus have asked Livorno to sign Adrian Mutu to help the Serie A leaders circumvent new rules on signing non-EC players...Edgar Davids' Inter trauma may end with a move back to Juventus...Udinese's Dino Fava eyes a move to Chievo...and the Coppa Italia quarter-finals are postponed.

JUVE SET UP MUTU MOVE

Juventus have craftily registered Adrian Mutu with Livorno to bypass limits set on non-EC players, the bianconeri's director general Luciano Moggi explained on Thursday.
Mutu - sacked by Chelsea after being suspended for using cocaine - had been set to join the Serie A leaders on a five-year contract, but the deal stalled as Juve already have four non-EC players in their ranks.
New rules stipulate a fifth cannot be signed unless the player was already playing in Italy that season.
Juve will now sign the Romania international from Livorno when the player's case against Chelsea for unfair dismissal is heard next week and international clearance comes through.

ANYTHING BUT UNUSUAL

"Anyway, Mutu can play with us for the next five years. We don't owe Chelsea anything, as it is an issue between the English club and him. We have a very precise agreement with Mutu," said Moggi, who had been set to unveil the former Parma striker at a hastily-cancelled press conference today.
"Mutu is a world-class player and we had been keeping an eye on him since his time at Verona, but his price tag was too high then," explained Moggi.
"This summer the talks were at an advanced stage before Roman Abramovich had a last-minute change of mind on a loan deal, but this chance came and we seized it. We won't be doing any more transfer deals"
Livorno defended their role, claiming the move was anything but unusual in Serie A circles.
"Our President simply decided to do Juve a favour," revealed director Elio Signorelli. "It's possible we'll get some players in exchange, but we haven't talked about it yet."

Mutu is Bianconero

Juventus has secured the Romanian champion Adrian Mutu's performances. Adrian Mutu, born on January, 8th 1979 in Calinesti (Romania), has signed for the Bianconeri Club a 5-year contract.

Juventus FC have signed Adrian Mutu on a five-year contract, although the Romanian international striker will not be free to play for the Italian side until mid-May when his suspension for failing a drugs test expires.

Chelsea sacking
The 26-year-old became a free agent in October, when Chelsea FC sacked him after he tested positive for a banned substance. The forward was subsequently suspended for seven months by the English Football Association, with world governing body FIFA later extending the ban worldwide. The ban runs until 18 May.

Club confirmation
"Juventus have obtained the services of Romanian striker Adrian Mutu," the Serie A leaders confirmed in a statement. Mutu will be eligible for Juve's final two games of the Serie A season, as they take place after his ban has been lifted.

Italian impact
Mutu, who has scored 13 goals in 38 games for his country, left Italian side Parma FC to join Chelsea for €22.4m in summer 2003 and made a bright start to his Premiership career but subsequently struggled to make an impact in England. He has, however, enjoyed success in Italy, scoring 17 goals in 31 league games for Parma in 2002/03 and also playing for Hellas-Verona FC and FC Internazionale Milano.
